Visa & Entry Information

Taiwan offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to citizens of many countries. Please check your eligibility with the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan.

Getting to Taipei: From the Airport

Most international flights arrive at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), located ~40 km west of Taipei. The airport has two terminals (T1 and T2) connected by a free shuttle.

Step 1: Take the Express MRT from T1 or T2 to Taipei Main Station (A1).

Step 2: Transfer to the Green Line (2 options):

  • Shortcut (recommended): Follow signs to Beimen Station (G13) via underground walkway (~7 min walk), puts you directly on the Green Line.
  • Alternative: Take the Red Line 2 stops to CKS Memorial Hall, then transfer to the Green Line (towards Xindian).

Step 3: Green Line to Gongguan Station (Exit 3), ~15 min from Beimen. NTU is a 3–5 min walk.

Option A: Route 1819

Runs to Taipei Main Station (not directly to NTU). Requires an MRT or taxi transfer onward to Gongguan.

Option B: Route 1960 (with transfer)

Take Bus 1960 towards Taipei City Hall → alight at Yuandong International Hotel (Shangri-La) → walk 2 min to Fengchu Park → catch city Bus 913 → alight at NTU Cancer Center (Jilong Rd.), southern edge of campus.

Da'an District

Walking distance to NTU. Quiet residential area with good dining options and easy MRT access.

Gongguan Area

Directly adjacent to NTU (Gongguan Station, Green Line). Lively student district with affordable options.

Zhongzheng District

Taipei city centre. Well-connected by MRT, close to major landmarks and business hotels.

Zhongshan District

North of the city centre, good transport links. Wide range of hotels at various price points.

Getting Around Taipei

Taipei MRT (Metro)

Taipei's MRT is clean, safe, punctual, and fully English-signposted. The nearest station to NTU is Gongguan Station (Green Line, Exit 3), a 5-minute walk to campus.

Taxi & Ride-Hailing

Taxis are metered and generally honest — you can catch one easily on the street. Uber and Line Taxi apps are also available across the city; in-app payment avoids cash hassle.

Tip: Most drivers don't speak English, have your destination ready in Chinese characters on your phone.

Food & Drink

Taiwan is a food paradise. Taipei in particular offers an extraordinary range, from Michelin-starred restaurants to legendary street food stalls. The Gongguan and Da'an areas around NTU are especially rich in affordable and delicious options.

🌱 Vegan & Vegetarian
Taipei is very vegan-friendly. Look for the character 素 (Sù) or the Buddhist swastika (卍) on signs, these indicate vegetarian/vegan establishments. For high-end vegan dining, Da'an District has become a global hub for fusion vegan cafes, including Plants, Ooh Cha Cha, and Loving Hut.

Taipei is a dynamic, cosmopolitan capital that seamlessly blends modernity with deep cultural heritage. Known for its world-class food, safe streets, efficient public transport, and welcoming locals, Taipei consistently ranks among Asia's most liveable and visitor-friendly cities.

Taipei 101

The iconic 508-metre skyscraper, once the world's tallest. Observation deck on floor 89 offers panoramic city views.

National Palace Museum

One of the world's greatest museums of Chinese art and artefacts. Over 700,000 items spanning 8,000 years of history.

Longshan Temple

A spectacular 18th-century temple in Wanhua district, one of Taipei's most important spiritual and cultural landmarks.

Daan Forest Park

Taipei's "Central Park", a peaceful urban forest just minutes from NTU, perfect for morning walks.

Ximending

Taipei's vibrant pedestrian shopping and entertainment district, buzzing day and night with food, fashion, and street art.

Elephant Mountain (象山)

A popular 30-minute hike with stunning views of Taipei 101 and the city skyline, especially beautiful at sunset.

Works excellently in Taiwan with transit directions for MRT and bus. Download offline maps for Da'an/Taipei before arrival.

Google Translate (camera mode)

Camera translation is extremely helpful for menus and signs. Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese characters.

Currency: New Taiwan Dollar (NT$)

1 USD ≈ NT$31–32. ATMs are widely available (7-Eleven, banks). Credit cards accepted at most hotels and restaurants; cash preferred at night markets.
